Unfortunately these years, as well as being unhappy ones for the Brontes, have proved to be unhappy for Bronte biographers, the main difficulty being chronology. Many of Charlotte's poems in this period are undated. Her letters to Ellen Nussey, delivered very often by hand, and before the invention of the postal service, have been dated wrongly. Fortunately the chronology of this period has been largely sorted out owing to the labours of Dr Edward Chitham. 3 The key date is that of the letter in which Charlotte writes of the departure of Emily as a teacher to Law Hill.
On 29 December 1836 Charlotte wrote a letter to Southey which has not survived. Southey replied belatedly in March 1837 with courteous discouragement, Charlotte thanked him on 16 March, and Southey wrote again (on 22 March) a polite letter commending Charlotte for her good sense in following his advice. It is customary to compare the tact of Charlotte which prompted Southey's courtesy with Branwell's injudicious letter of January 1837 - following his failure to obtain a reply to his letters to Blackwood's Magazine - to Wordsworth.
Kings George IV and William IV, though amorous, were hardly romantic characters, but William IV did play some part in the constitutional crises of the early 1830s, and these are reflected in the struggles of Angria. Zamorna certainly owes something to the Duke of Wellington; autocratic and unhappily married, the Duke was in opposition for much of the 1830s, but wielded considerable authority. His wife had died in 1831, and in a good Angrian incident which seems improbable to students of modern politics an angry mob had besieged the Duke's house at the time her body lay there.
